The basic analogue techniques used to Drive Stepper motors have changed little in recent decades. With many new digital signal processors (DSP) becoming available SmartDrive's Engineering team felt new and exciting opportunities were opening up to improve Stepper performance and Controller capability. However with no comparable products on the market and few published articles relating to this technology our Engineering team embarked on a long term research project to investigate these new devices and evaluate their suitability for Stepper products. Out of this pioneering work Taranis was born - a fast BASIC machine and motion Controller, setting new performance standards and taking Stepper technology into an exciting new digital era

Drives - DM Series
SmartDrive offers a range of half-stepping and microstepping drives based upon the popular 3Ux160mm Euromodule format. These drives utilise top quality MOSFET technology coupled with high efficiency heatsinking to provide continuous motor winding currents up to 16.5A within a 9HP (1.8"/46mm) module width.
The D and DM ranges all include Comprehensive Dynamic Protection (CDP) which reacts within 5uS to protect itself against motor winding faults, including short to winding, short to ground and low inductance. In addition there is protection against irregular motor supply voltage, low logic supply and over temperature conditions.
For demanding applications requiring smooth precision motion, the DM range of drives are the solution. Designed around surface mount ASIC technology, the DM drives increase the number of 'steps' a motor makes per revolution from 200 up to 51200. With both binary and decimal resolutions available there's a setting to suit all applications

Controllers - Euro205
The Euro205 is a powerful stepper/servo controller giving up to 5 axis of motion with the option for encoder feedback. Motion can be controlled by up to 5 multi-tasked BASIC programs. The Euro205 comes with 16 inputs and 8 outputs as standard with the option to expand this to256 IO via CANbus based IO modules and also to include analogue input modules
Programming the Euro205 is performed using an intuitive Windows development package Motion Perfect. Motion Perfect includes features to help aid development and commisioning of software. Motion Pecfect includes IO status monitors, program status monitors, terminal emulation, keypad emulation and many features to help debug software. The BASIC programming language includes commands for linear and circular interpolation, datuming, position verification via encoder feedback. Also available to help produce complex motion profiles is CAD2Motion. CAD2Motion takes a generic DXF file and converts the lines into motion commands ready for placing into a program, all you have to do is set up the necessary parameters and any IO interaction and away you go!

Controllers - M3P
The M3P is a single motion three-axis controller providing a range of stepper motor control features and comprehensive IO. Normally three motors may be controlled but only one may be in motion at any time. The M3P is suited to a wide variety of positioning aapplications that do not require CNC type multi-axis vector control.

Controllers - MC204
The MC204 and MC216 Bookcase controllers are powerful controllers using the latest 32 bit DSP technology to provide a multi-tasking environment suitable for the most complex machine environments. The unique plug in daughter board system allows any configuration of stepper and servo axis to be used.

Systems - SA series
SA systems combine all the elements required for a complete motion control system. Taking a modular approach to the usual complicated wiring of drives, controllers and power supplies, the SA family pre-connects these in one integrated housing, providing a compact easy to install solution. Power supply and backplane reside inside the SA housing, whilst I/O and motor connections are handled through an externally accessed panel using demountable screw terminal connectors.
SA systems are compatible with our standard eurocard controller range, or are available as external control units for use with a PLC or other external control system.

Systems - RA series
The RA rack systems are custom built for each application to ensure that the optimum performance is obtained. Any combination of SmartDrive eurocard controllers and drives can be fitted into a rack to achieve the necessary motion. The flelxible design approach means that racks can be supplied with an internal power supply, alternatively an external power supply can be used.

Motors
We offer a unique range of stepper motors, in various frame and stack sizes. Special assembly options are also available including terminal boxes, failsafe brakes, encoders, gearboxes and IP65 sealing, keyways and shaft extensions on 23, 34 and 42 frame motors.
